How many shocks can one episode have? Humans reaches its peak in those heart-stopping moments and there are plenty of them this week. The first one hits early on: Fred is still alive.

‘You’re sorry for what you did’

Who hasn’t wanted to “power down” that jobsworth Vera all season? Niska is the woman to finally do it, but sadly Dr Millican doesn’t get his moment of relief, because the semi-synth vigilante is threatening him with a knife.

“You should be scared of me,” she says. But he has already lost his wife and his precious memories. What more is there to fear?

Even though Odi can’t get the words “toast with apricot jam” out, it’s a relief to see that he has made his way home from the wilderness, like a clawless homing pigeon. His resonator needs looking at and, in an uncharacteristic moment of softness, Niska is the woman for the job.

‘I know machines can’t feel’

There’s bound to be a bit of tension in Laura’s house with Joe off on a “work holiday” after his indiscretion with Anita. Mattie finally gets to the bottom of who the mysterious Tom is – he’s not someone Laura is having an affair with, but her brother, who died when she was 11. “He was hit by a car,” she says. “When I was supposed to be watching him.” Her mother never forgave her, but she’s still alive, which explains Laura’s extended business trips.

The shock is only just sinking in on the drive home when there is an even bigger one. As Laura reminisces about Tom, Anita has a look in her eye that suggests she is touched by what she’s saying.

Suddenly, she gasps in a very human way. Everybody panics.

Gemma Chan’s first Mia moment was terrifying and as she switches her persona it’s once again skillful and chilling. “The Anita personality identifies me as rogue code, tries to delete me,” she explains, breathlessly. “Leo was wrong. I’m in here, but not in my head.” Just before Anita shuts Mia down and takes over again, she reveals that her brother died too. Is there a connection between Mia and Laura’s past and Anita’s mission to keep Sophie safe?

“I don’t know what you are,” says Laura. “But I know machines can’t feel.”

‘The angle of entry was optimised’

“Was that not pleasurable, Jill? The angle of entry was optimised.”

Yes, Simon and Jill are in bed after a “very efficient” bit of human-synth loving. Everything is in the right place, like when a synth loads the dishwasher, but Jill can’t help wishing Simon could be spontaneous or surprise her with a compliment. “Your body mass index is well within the recommended range for someone of your age, height and weight,” he offers. Perfect.

Desperate for excitement, Jill has Simon “modded”, but he goes on the rampage so Pete has to come and shut him down with a metal bar, his ferocity fuelled by Simon mentioning the words “penetrate” and “your wife” in the same sentence. Still, Pete was seduced by Karen who unleashed her synth identity afterwards. Surely this is the stuff his nightmares are made of.

‘She became a mother to me’

The jigsaw puzzle of Leo’s story comes together as he lets Mattie watch extracts from his digital memory in return for a reunion with Mia.

Up until now, it would have been logical to assume that Mia was Leo’s girlfriend. Or sister, at a push. But David Elster created Mia to care for his son when his wife’s mental illness meant that she couldn’t. “She became a mother to me,” Leo recalls.

His human life ends with the memory of drowning in the car driven by his mother, who had snatched him away. But Mia saved him and David kept him alive, bringing him back to consciousness.

‘We just want to live free’

Last week, it looked like Mia was going to be stuck in Anita’s synth body for ever, but there’s a sudden turnaround when Mattie brings Leo and Max to the house and they tinker with her code. At last, Mia comes alive and the three synthetic siblings are reunited with hugs that could be straight out of Long Lost Family. That’s if anyone from Long Lost Family was ever a synth on the run from a dangerous gang.

“We just want to live free,” pleads Mia. Even Laura is moved – she puts her feelings towards Anita to one side to offer protection.

Nothing good can come of Max and Leo driving off into the night, especially when they panic after being pulled over by the police. They try to escape, but Max can’t run any longer and Hobb and Leo are helpless as he jumps off a bridge. His sad eyes and last words are haunting as he slips underwater: “If I die, it means I’ve lived.”

Notes and queries

Season

If there were any laughs to be had this week, they came from Simon’s absurd bedroom chat: “Hello, Peter. I’m in the middle of intercourse with your wife.”

Niska was created nine years ago, so, as Dr Millican says, she’s just a child. “He didn’t always treat me like one,” she reveals, sadly. Will there be more on the sinister side of David Elster’s character?

Inhumans Episode List

Max and Mattie’s bittersweet bonding session drew similarities between the mind of a conscious synth and a teenage girl: “Frightening. Confusing. Like the feelings are too big.”
